Beadwork Tapestries/Oh Behave! (2022)
Joyce Overheul offers a witty take on serious societal problems. In her work ‘Oh Behave!’ she uses materials that remind you of what was once typically female: needlework and textile arts. She features defensive texts such as “It was just a joke”, and “You are not allowed to say anything these days anymore”. All too often, women hear these lines when they address misogynist comments by their male counterparts. Her work “¥ € $” contrasts obvious capitalist financial symbols with soft and sensual pillows. It makes you wonder. What role do eroticism and sexuality have in a capitalist society? Can we fight capitalism with softness and sensuality?
